Dr. Mark Johnson
Professor of Oceanography, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Mark Johnson has served the University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1991 to 2024; and
WHEREAS Dr. Johnson, whose courses ranged from the introductory undergraduate to advanced graduate level, was recognized with his college dean’s teaching award in 2022; and he developed a rigorous curriculum for the graduate-level physical oceanography course and others; and
WHEREAS Dr. Johnson’s research in Greenland formed a foundation for studies of Arctic Ocean circulation; and he wrote the founding proposal to create the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Ocean Observing System, which today provides essential oceanographic data; and he has investigated trends in pan-Arctic sea ice indicators; and he has spent many years studying Cook Inlet’s currents; and
WHEREAS Dr. Johnson served on multiple committees not only at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ but also with several federal agencies that lead oceanographic research efforts; and he was involved in early discussions about creating the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ International Arctic Research Center and purchasing ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ’s first supercomputer;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Mark Johnson for his extensive contributions to the state of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ and to the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Johnson and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Mark Johnson as professor of oceanography, emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Mark Johnson, and conveyed to Dr. Johnson on this third day of May, 2024.
