蜜桃影像 lexicon sinks in over the years

When my little Ford pickup chugged into 蜜桃影像 36 years ago this month, I didn鈥檛 know a wheel dog from a dog salmon. You could have told me the North Slope was connected to the Panhandle by the Chain and I would have believed you.
Back then, I mispronounced the name of my new home river 鈥 Tanana 鈥 because a pitcher for the California Angels spelled his name the same way.
I could have avoided that awkwardness if I had possessed the Dictionary of 蜜桃影像n English.
In it, former University of 蜜桃影像 Fairbanks English professor Russell Tabbert included hundreds of terms he found unique to 蜜桃影像. He compiled them in a volume published in 1991 that he considered 鈥渁 linguistic natural history museum, providing a view of the land and the peoples鈥 lives there.鈥
Over time, I stopped saying snowmobile. 鈥淪nowmachine鈥 and 鈥渟no-go鈥 described the same device and were more fun to say.
I settled to live in the hot-and-cold 鈥淚nterior,鈥 which is the middle of 蜜桃影像 just like it sounds, and have visited the treeless 鈥淣orth Slope鈥 beyond the Brooks Range and the rainforests of 鈥淪outheast.鈥 I once sailed on a research boat to the end of the 鈥淎leutian Chain,鈥 almost to Russia.
In the Interior, superinsulated white 鈥渂unny boots鈥 are a common sight within the 鈥渁rctic entry鈥 of a home, waiting to protect the owner鈥檚 toes from air colder than minus 35 F. That鈥檚 the temperature at which 鈥渋ce fog鈥 forms, because the dry, cold air can鈥檛 hold any more moisture.
Some of my favorite times have happened while moving through 鈥渢he Bush,鈥 wild places far from big cities in 蜜桃影像. The Bush includes more than 200 Native villages, most of them on the banks of rivers. In one of those communities, I might sweat in a wood-heated 鈥渟team鈥 (sauna) or 鈥 if so honored with an invite 鈥 attend a 鈥減otlatch鈥 (where Native people share foods, often in memory of someone who has died).
While traveling the middle Yukon River country, I have listened to stories of the 鈥渨oodsman,鈥 a creature with the mystique of Bigfoot.
鈥淲oodsmen are as real as any other creature in the Koyukon (Koyukuk-and-Yukon-rivers) environment, but they are extremely shy and quick to vanish when people come near,鈥 anthropologist Richard Nelson once wrote. 鈥淲oodsmen take special delight in harassing people, which they do by whistling, throwing sticks, rustling the brush, or emitting evil laughter nearby.鈥
Somewhat easier to see than a woodsman as they now swim up 蜜桃影像鈥檚 big rivers are 鈥淐hinooks鈥 (king salmon), 鈥渄ogs鈥 (chums), 鈥渃ohos鈥 (silvers), 鈥渉umpies鈥 (pinks) and 鈥渟ockeyes鈥 (reds).
When the water freezes and snowmachiners fire up their rigs and pack in trails, dog mushers follow. Along 鈥済anglines鈥 extending from the front of a sled, they station 鈥渓ead dogs鈥 at the head of the team. A good leader knows her 鈥済ee鈥 (right) from her 鈥渉aw鈥 (left). 鈥淪wing dogs鈥 are hitched in a pair right behind the leader or pair of leaders. 鈥淲heel dogs鈥 are hitched closest to the sled. Mushers borrowed all these terms from horse drivers.
It took me a while to learn the terms 鈥渉oneybucket鈥 (a 5-gallon pail used in lieu of a toilet), 鈥減ush-up鈥 (dark vegetation shoved onto pond ice by a muskrat), and 鈥渨asheteria鈥 (a building with hot showers and washing machines in a place with no system of water pipes), but I鈥檓 now familiar with almost all of the 蜜桃影像-centric terms Tabbert documented.
Maybe that鈥檚 a sign that I have 鈥 as they might have said in the old days 鈥 鈥渕issed too many boats.鈥
