Federal Work Study can save your department money

The Federal Work Study program allows for your department to hire a student worker - and not pay the full cost of wages! Your office will pay up to 50 percent of the wages while the Financial Aid Office covers the remaining amount. Any student position can be a FWS position. This is a great opportunity to save your department money while supporting ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ students through employment and training.

To hire a new position, work with your HR Coordinator to post the position. When you receive your slate of candidates, the Financial Aid Office can let you know who is eligible for Federal Work Study.

Have you already hired? Send the names to the Financial Aid Office and we can check eligibility. You can switch an already hired student worker to a FWS worker. Have your HR Coordinator contact the FWS Coordinator (Ashley Munro, akmunro@alaska.edu, 907-474-1934) for instructions on how to make the switch.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be admitted into a degree-seeking program at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (2.0 GPA and completing 67 percent of their classes)
  • Have a 2022-2023 FAFSA
  • Demonstrate financial need (based on the FAFSA)

Most positions qualify for 50 percent covered by the Financial Aid Office. Positions that have community service components can be fully covered by the Financial Aid Office. Community service includes tutors open to the public, safety officers, or reading buddies.

The Financial Aid Office has open positions for reading buddies and math tutors to be placed in an elementary school. If you work with an interested student, but do not want to open your own position you can refer them to our office.
