Food preservation, gardening workshops planned for Bethel

Food preservation and gardening classes are scheduled in Bethel and will take place in the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center, shown here.

A University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service program assistant will travel to Bethel to teach classes on gardening, food safety and food preservation. 

Jasmine Shaw will lead workshops Sept. 6-8 at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center, 420 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway. All events are free. Register at . Youths under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult. 

On Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-7 p.m., Shaw will be available to test pressure canner dial gauges and distribute gardening and food preservation information. 

On Saturday, Sept. 7, Shaw will lead two workshops. From 10-11:30 a.m., she will teach the class 10 Steps to Growing Your Own Food, which is tailored to new gardeners and Bethel’s climate. Participants will get hands-on experience and make a small bag of fertilizer. 

From 1-6 p.m., Shaw will teach the class Canning the Harvest. Participants will get hands-on experience pressure canning vegetables and fish, and water-bath canning to preserve berries, jams and jellies. The class is for all experience levels.

From 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, Shaw will teach a pickling and fermentation class for all experience levels.
