Student Health and Counseling launches winter wellness program
The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) wants to help you prepare for the upcoming winter so that you can enjoy your time in Fairbanks while avoiding the dreaded "winter blues." SHCC has come up with an eight-week preparedness program dedicated to helping students plan for the potential emotional and social hardships that can come with the colder and darker months.
Beginning Sept. 30, students can stop by the Winter Wellness table in MBS every Friday from 12-2 p.m. to complete a Winter Wellness activity and be entered to win prizes. Fun giveaways from community partners will be at the table each week, as well. Each weekly activity is rooted in research findings related to lifting mood and maintaining mental wellness during the months when seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can emerge.
Students who complete all eight weeks of activities will be entered to win big prizes at the end of the eight-week campaign (e.g. happy lights, ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ swag, tickets and/or gear to go on winter adventures in Fairbanks, and more). Be sure to bring your Polar Express card to the table each week, as the card will be swiped to document your participation in order to be entered into the final drawing for prizes.
Weekly themes include:
- Establishing a morning routine
- Choosing a hobby
- Getting curious about your feelings
- Get moving!
- Preparing your space
- Getting serious about sleep
- Finding cozy comforts
- Adventuring in (winter) wonderland
