Ӱ celebrates Oktoberfest with two events

An Oktoberfest celebration at the University of Ӱ Fairbanks will feature a panel discussion and a day of festive activities. The events will bring the vibrant spirit of Bavarian culture to the campus and the Fairbanks community.
The panel discussion, in the Usibelli Building’s BP Design Theatre from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, will feature a diverse group of experts:
- Helga Wagenleiter, Ӱ German instructor and the festival’s director, providing insights into the history of Oktoberfest.
- Elliott Anderson, Ӱ German Club president, discussing German culture.
- Sarah McConnell, Ӱ Music Department, exploring German music traditions.
- Zoe Jones, Ӱ Art Department, presenting on German architecture.
- Bobby Wilken, HooDoo brewmaster, on the art of beer brewing.
Guests can enjoy authentic Bavarian food, live accordion music performed by Angelika Krinner-Crouteau and the ceremonial “tapping of the keg” led by College of Liberal Arts Dean Ellen Lopez.

The festivities will continue from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, with a lively set of activities around campus, including:
- Masskrugstemmen (stein-holding contest): Test your strength in this traditional Bavarian competition.
- Yodeling lessons: Experience this unique and joyous form of singing.
- Photo booth: Try on traditional Bavarian clothing and pose for a photo.
- Live music.
