What Does the Old Moon Think of the New Moon
by Kristene Brown
Thin
little scrim of a shadow
with your narrow uppity chin,
you are little more
than a glowing hot bulb. Yet,
this bulb is not bright. No,
this bulb is rather dim.
New moon
you are all slender slants
and pitch
with perfect tilts and angles.
Look at you, not a single sag
or unwanted dangle.
Slim. Yes,
enjoy that metabolism
while you can. Enjoy that high
cruel view
there among your sorority
of stars.
Soon, you will swell and bloat.
Soon, you will be less shine
and gilt
more curdled cream
and sour milk.
The plane went down, the flotation device stashed beneath your seat helped you reach an uninhabitable shore, and you have just enough battery left to send one text message to a potential rescuer. Who’s going to help you off this deserted island?
