Prospective Graduate Students
Process for prospective graduate students to follow to apply to NRE or NRSU graduate degree programs:
- Begin the process by starting the online application for Graduate Admission . The application will require several components which may take time to complete, but starting earlier rather than later will be an advantage.
- Email the Academic Coordinator in the Department, to let us know that you have either started or completed your application so your application can be tracked in-house as well as in the University’s Office of Admissions. Please provide your student identification number assigned by the Office of Admissions after you have started your application.
- Have your official academic transcripts sent from each collegiate institution attended to the Office of Admissions and the Registrar. Transcripts can either be ordered through one of the online secure transcript services or must come in a sealed envelope from each institution attended. International applicants must submit certified English translations of transcripts of all college-level course work. Unofficial transcripts may be sent as email attachments to uaf-snre@alaska.edu.
- Have your official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores sent to ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment does require the GRE for admission.
- At least three letters of recommendation are required. Your ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ admissions application will request the names and email addresses of at least three people who are able to vouch for your work, character and ability to undertake graduate study and research. They will then receive an email where they can upload their letter of recommendation on your behalf.
- You will also be asked to submit a statement of goals. Please indicate why you want to study in the field of Natural Resources and Environment/Sustainability. If you have been corresponding with a particular faculty member, please mention that as well. Include your qualifications and educational experience. These forms may be uploaded to the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Admissions Application portal. Information about the Department of Natural Resources and Environment faculty is available on the faculty webpage, the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station website, and the .
- Resume or CV is also required for the application.
- International students have, in addition to the above, more requirements which are outlined in the and summarized below.
Additional procedures and forms that are required of international students
All international students need to take the TOEFL or IELTS test and request official scores be sent from Educational Testing Service (ETS). The school code is 4866. The university’s minimum TOEFL requirement is a score of 79 (internet-based test), or for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), a minimum score of 6.5.
Fill out the ‘Financial Statement for International Applicants’ and mail to the address below: All international students are required to complete a Financial Statement for International Students. International students must sign a financial statement and provide documentation that they have funds available to pay all expenses at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ as well as round-trip transportation between their home and ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. Because the application for F-1 visas requires students to affirm that they do not intend to live in the United States permanently, they are not eligible for resident tuition fees. The minimum estimated cost for one school year at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ (in 2019-2020) for an international graduate student is $37,070. This covers university fees, housing and food on campus, and a reasonable amount of personal expenses. It does not include transportation to and from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, summer living or winter clothing costs.
