Training Programs
The Office of Research Integrity offers training on a variety of compliance areas. These training programs are available online, as formal training courses or workshops, for-credit course, via informal workshops, or as customized training for a specific audience. Basic courses related to the Humane Care and Use of Animals, Protection of Human Participants, Export Controls, and Conflicts of Interest are available online through a program called CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) administered by the University of Miami.
Types of Training
Human Participants: Training in human participant protections is required for all ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ researchers conducting human participant research. Research personnel must complete the applicable training course(s) within CITI before conducting human participant research or access identifiable human participant data. For more information on enrolling for this course, please visit: Institutional Review Board website.
Animal Care & Use: CITI training(s) is required for all individuals working with live vertebrates. It provides a review of the regulatory requirements, review procedures, and ethical principles governing the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing. For more information on enrolling for these courses, please visit: IACUC website.
Export Controls: The "Export Compliance" course in CITI is required for all individuals responsible for or working on an export controlled project. It provides a review of the U.S. Export Control regulations and describes the varying responsibilities of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ personnel involved in export controls. For more information on enrolling for this course, please visit the Export Controls Training page.
Conflicts of Interest: Training in conflicts of interest is required for all ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ principal investigators receiving PHS funding. The term "investigator" includes anyone who is responsible for the design, conduct or reporting of the proposed research or educational activity. Contact the ORI for more information or to enroll.
Responsible Conduct in Research: A REQUIRED training that provides a basic overview of the concepts of Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR). ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ offers RCR instruction as a two part training course. Part one is offered online through for any students, staff, or faculty and is a prerequisite for Part two. Part two is offered in person and/or video conference. Completion of parts one and two satisfy the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) requirement for the 'Responsible Conduct of Research Training' for trainees (researchers, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates).
Animal Facility Orientation: This in-person session is intended for all personnel working in ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ-owned animal facilities in Fairbanks. This includes approved satellite facilities, Biological Research & Diagnostics Building, CFOS Fisheries Facility in the Arctic Health Research Building, Biological Reserve, and the Large Animal Research Station. Contact the ORI for more information or to enroll.
IRB Orientation: This in-person session is intended as an introduction to the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Institutional Review Board's policies, procedures, review types, and forms. Although not required, this orientation is strongly recommended for new graduate students, post doctoral researchers, and faculty planning to conduct research involving human subjects. Contact the ORI for more information or to enroll.
IBC Orientation: This in-person session is intended as an introduction to the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Institutional Biosafety Committee's policies, procedures, review types, and forms. Although not required, this orientation is strongly recommended for new graduate students, post doctoral researchers, and faculty planning to conduct research involving recombinant DNA, infectious agents, or genetically modified organisms. Contact the ORI for more information or to enroll.
Biological Safety Cabinet Training: This course is required for all individuals who will be working with a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC). Training must be completed before an individual can be approved to work on any project requiring use of a BSC. This course is available through Blackboard; contact the ORI for more information or to enroll.
Special Topic Workshops: Periodically the Office of Research Integrity will offer workshops on specific regulatory or research ethics topics. These workshops will be advertised on the ORI home page, through emails, and the Cornerstone. Workshops are open to all ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ faculty, staff, and students, but are typically designed and intended for a researcher audience rather than support staff.
