Phytoplankton and nutrition: Evaluating effects of phytoplankton assemblage composition on food quality for consumers
Jeanette Gann is an oceanographer with the Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) program at NOAA in Juneau, ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. She participates in at-sea surveys throughout ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, where she focuses on phytoplankton community changes in the Bering Sea and Gulf of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, including harmful algal blooms (HABs). The focus of her PhD involves investigating nutritional qualities of varying phytoplankton communities through fatty acids. A large piece of her work is looking at how phytoplankton taxa relate to zooplankton and young fish in general, and age-0 walleye pollock in particular. Another piece involves working on a genomics protocol to assess diatom species composition in ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñn waters with more efficiency than current microscopy techniques are able to accomplish. Additionally, Jeanette is a member of PICES (North Pacific Marine Science Organization) where she serves as chair of the Technical Committee on Data Exchange (TCODE), and serves on the Science Board.
