Friday Focus: Sankalpa at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ
October 06, 2023
In the yoga class I attend, our instructor encourages each of us to begin each practice with Sankalpa, a Sanskrit word that is roughly translated into English as intention, or setting an intention. According to most scholarly works, Sanskrit is the oldest language in the world and it is still alive today as one of the official languages of India. I am learning to take the concept of Sankalpa and many of yoga's impactful concepts with me off the mat, and into my daily life. As teachers, we are familiar with lesson plans and learning goals in the classroom. While not a goal itself, sankalpa is a key concept to achieving goals. It is a way to set your mind in the direction you want to go. Unlike a goal that requires specific action, sankalpa flows within us into every action we take.

Friday Focus: We have the expertise
September 29, 2023
At the beginning of each new semester, I often introduce myself and explain the role of the chancellor to new students, faculty, and staff who recently joined ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. At these events, I share that a large part of my job is working with all of our administrators, faculty, staff and students to do everything we can to execute our mission and live our vision: excellence through transformative experiences. Having such an inspiring purpose is one of the reasons I am so passionate about ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. Across the spectrum of people I meet, I am often surprised how many aren't aware of how special ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ is. For instance, did you know we are currently in the top 7% of universities in the nation for research? ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ is a distinct university with strengths and expertise that should have ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ faculty, staff and students walking tall. No one at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ should think that "outside" is where the expertise is. It is here!

Friday Focus: Forging ahead into a new academic year
September 22, 2023
September in Fairbanks holds a special place in my heart. It marks the season of harvest, a time when many of us reap the rewards of our summer and prepare for the winter ahead. Evenings and weekends are filled with last-minute house projects, stacking wood and pulling out our extension cords and winter gear. Personally, I take pride in my tiny garden, which has been flourishing, and I've recently added some baby chickens to my growing homestead. Another reason I look forward to this time of year is the return of our students to ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, whether they are coming back for another year or setting foot on our campus for the very first time.
