Polar bears of the past survived warmth

In a recent paper, scientists wrote that a small population of polar bears living off Greenland and Arctic Canada increased by 1.6 times when they compared the numbers from the 1990s to 2013 and 2014. They concluded that lighter sea ice might have benefited the animals.

Canceled: Observation and mindfulness workshop

The University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Museum of the North will offer an adult art workshop entitled "Sustained Observation and Mindfulness" on Sunday, June 4, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Visiting artist Jonathan VanDyke will guide participants in using mindfulness techniques to view and meditate upon objects from the museum collection that are not on public exhibit.

Evidence indicates a thick ice sheet, not annual sea ice and icebergs, covered the Arctic Ocean at some point during the last 140,000 years. Now, University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks scientists will be looking for more geologic proof of the ice sheet's existence, sources, behavior and extent.

Wahl named director of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's Bristol Bay Campus

The University of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Fairbanks College of Rural and Community Development has appointed Wanda Wahl to serve as director of the Bristol Bay Campus in Dillingham. Wahl has served as interim director since May 2021 and first worked there in 1985.
