Sean Asikłuk Topkok appointed director of Center for Cross-Cultural Studies

The College of Rural and Community Development is excited to announce that Sean AsikÅ‚uk Topkok has been appointed director of the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies. AsikÅ‚uk has a long history with the CXCS, having worked with the center and previous leadership since 1997 through the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Rural Systemic Initiative and the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Native Knowledge Network. Topkok's new appointment became effective April 10, 2023.

Limited employee spaces available in Nanook Grown Student Gardener Training Program

For the first time, the Nanook Grown Student Gardener Training Program has limited spaces available for ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ employees during the 2023 gardening season. The program is free for students. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ employees may participate for a $40 fee.

Registration is open for the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Summer Music Academy. SMA is a day-camp for young musicians who have completed 5th-12th grades. All levels are welcome. This year we are introducing a new Introduction to Band and Orchestra program. No experience is necessary and instruments will be available for rent.

Friday Focus: Celebrate our accomplishments

At ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, we have a lot to celebrate. Last week we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating class at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's 101st commencement ceremony. The evening before, we conferred honorary doctorates, meritorious service awards and emeritus status to retiring faculty and staff in a ceremony at the Davis Concert Hall. To top off an exciting week, last night we held our signature fundraiser -- the Chancellor's Blue and Gold Celebration in the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Troth Yeddha' campus student union. Our community came together to recognize the Emil Usibelli Teaching, Research and Service awardees and raise funds to support student scholarships. That evening, donors gave over $435,000 to student scholarships, including a generous gift of $350,000 from Kinross ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ!

However, fewer people are aware that UAMN is also the largest teaching and research museum in ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ.

ABEC Mariculture Innovation Research Fund RFP

For many, tomorrow marks the end of the term and the end of the academic year. The end is upon us! It is a huge relief. Commencement is tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Carlson Center. If you usually go, I will see you there. If you don't usually attend, I encourage you to go. The event and ceremony provide a moment of clarity for the meaning of our collective endeavor like few others. It is a wonderful and affirming way to finish the year. At the same time, for many here at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, this weekend marks the beginning of summer as much or even more than the end of the spring semester. It marks the beginning of a whole new and different season of our efforts.

In 2020, the U.S. Department of Education updated regulatory definitions of distance learning within the Distance Education and Innovation Ruling that all higher education institutions receiving Title IV funds must comply with. The regulation became effective July 1, 2021, and requires that for all online courses for which students may use federal financial aid (Title IV funds), there is "regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors."
